Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro did not defend his title at the International Tennis United States, was not sufficiently recovered from surgery on his right wrist.

Del Potro has not played in the ATP tournament since the Australian Open in January because of the wrist injury.
The 21-year-old operated in May, was training for two weeks for the tournament in Flushing Meadows. Last year, there are signed his first Grand Slam triumph, beating Rafael Nadal in the semifinals and Roger Federer in the final.
The right wrist Del Potro bother him since last year. In particular, it removed the second round at Shanghai in October, because of tendinitis in the wrist.
He lost the fourth round at Melbourne in January and has not played since. Del Potro is currently ninth in the world rankings, but it will slide because of his absence from the tournament in New York
In addition to the absence of del Potro and Serena Williams, three time winner in New York, the American stage of the Grand Slam will be without Justine Henin and No. 10 men, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The tournament begins Aug. 30.
