The triple world champion Ayrton Senna of Brazil, died in the race at the Grand Prix of San Marino in 1994, was elected by his peers greatest F1 driver of all time, according to a survey by the British magazine Autosport on Thursday.
Some 217 drivers in F1, combining 9 194 departures and 270 race wins, including Michael Schumacher, Paul Pietsch, the oldest driver still alive, or even defending champion Jenson Button, participated in this survey. Ayrton Senna, crowned in 1988, 1990 and 1991, won 41 victories and 65 pole positions in 162 GP. His struggles against the French Alain Prost belong to the legend of motorsport. The Brazilian died on 1 May 1994 at Imola (Italy) during the Grand Prix of San Marino in the Tamburello bend. He was 34.
Seven-time world champion German Michael Schumacher comes second in this ranking, ahead of Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio, assayed five times, Alain Prost (four championships) and Briton Jim Clark (two). The double world champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso is the highest ranked driver still active (9th), ahead of Briton Lewis Hamilton (17th, crowned in 2008), Kimi Raikkonen (22nd, 2007), German Sebastian Vettel (26th) and Jenson Button (30th, despite his coronation this season).
