Freire, future retiree in good shape

Spaniard Oscar Freire (Rabobank), who will retire at the end of the season, won Monday in Cordoba (southern Spain) the 2nd stage of the Ruta del Sol, its second victory in 15 days after successful during the Challenge of Mallorca.

His compatriot Sergio Pardilla (Carmiooro) is leading the race with 9 seconds ahead of Belgian Jurgen Van den Broeck (Omega Pharma).

Freire, 34 years and three times World Champion road (1999, 2001, 2004), had announced in September 2009: “All this ends next year I retire.”

The 2nd stage of the Ruta del Sol has seen a massive fall in the last mile. Two big names in racing have been affected: the Italian Damiano Cunego (Lampre) and Germany’s Linus Gerdemann (Milram).

They were however part of the overall standings after stage, Cunego 4 to 13 seconds Pardilla Gerdemann and 16th to 41 seconds.
