Golf Holidays in South Africa

There are many wonderful locations around the world to play golf, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and the United States for example. But there can be few better places however, than South Africa’s Western Cape. Combine the most stunning coastal and mountain scenery, a magnificent climate and rather good wine with golf courses such as Erinvale, Royal Cape, The Links at Fancourt, Arabella and Pezula Golf Club and you have the ultimate golf holiday destination.

South Africa also has the advantage of the language being the same, one drives on the left and the time difference is just an hour in summer and two hours in winter.

There are two specific areas that we would recommend visiting, firstly the Cape Town area, including the Winelands and secondly the Garden Route. Within the Cape Town region you will find traditional parkland courses in unbelievable settings – Erinvale for example, at the foot of the Hellentot Holland Mountains, Stellenbosch which is set in the heart of the Winelands, Steenberg which overlooks the amazing False Bay, and Araballa Golf Club which sweeps down towards the coast and lagoon near to Hermanus. Add to the above Milnerton Links, which provides picture postcard views of Table Mountain from what is known as the Bloubergstrand.

From Cape Town the drive to the beginning of the Garden Route is four hours. The heart of the Garden Route is Knysna and this is where we would recommend that you stay. In terms of the golf, there are surely few more unique courses than The Links at Fancourt, which indeed has the feel and experience of a links course, until you realise that is, that the sea is over 20 miles away! Pezula Golf Club is just east of Knysna, and provides one of the great tests of golf in South Africa, not to mention its unbelievable cliff and forestry setting. Simola is just extraordinary – you need to play it and see why! Plettenburg Bay, George and Knysna are also courses of the highest order. Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome to Arabia, welcome to golfing paradise! In truth, golf in Dubai does not come much better. Golf courses of the very highest order, a choice of hotels to rival the best in the world and a way of life which is opulence personified!

There are seven golf courses to select from, two at the Emirates Golf Club, the Majlis and the Wadi and then Dubai Creek, Nad Al Sheba, The Montgomerie, Al Badia and the Desert Course at Arabian Ranches. All are unique in their own right, but courses at the Emirates Club, Dubai Creek and The Montgomerie are the ‘must play’ courses.

We have suggested an itinerary that is rich in quality both in terms of the golf and the accommodation. But there is also so much more to Dubai, Desert Safaris, Camel Trekking, Hot Air Ballooning, Dhow Cruising, Horse Racing and of course shopping. The golf is fantastic, but Dubai offers so much more too. A golfing destination of the highest order.

Golf Tour of China

Golf in the Orient! It sounds rather inviting and the good news is, the experience is every bit as good as the image.

The Mission Hills Golf Resort is set to become as well known as Gleneagles, Valderamma and Fancourt, taking its place and quite rightly so, as one of the finest golf resorts on the globe. With twelve golf courses, all individually designed by different golf architects, Mission Hills really is unrivalled in terms of its quality and setting. Not surprisingly therefore, the resort forms the core of our suggested golf tour of China. But there is more to the suggested tour than just Mission Hills. You will arrive and depart from Hong Kong, experiencing not only golf on the former colony, but some of the top sightseeing attractions as well. And then there is Hainan Island, regarded as China’s Hawaii. With a range of excellent golf courses, a beautiful setting and a fine all year round climate, Hainan Island is the perfect compliment to Mission Hills and Hong Kong.

In terms of golf travel, the frontier seems to be moving ever further east. China is now very much on the golf destination map and it has every right when thinking in terms of quality. If you want the ultimate golfing experience, then the golf tour of China is going to challenge for top spot.

PostHeaderIcon The Presidents Cup, Royal Melbourne Golf Club, 15-20th November

This year the Royal Melbourne Golf Club will host the prestigious Presidents Cup for the ninth time. The tournament will feature the top players outside of Europe pitting their wits against this beautiful but uncompromising course.

Taking place every 2 years between the Ryder Cup, the tournament allows these players to battle it out against each other as they represent their countries an a nail baiting international match play competition, with the International team taking on the might of the USA. The top ten international players will take on the top ten U.S players, along with two captains’ selections on each side, over a riveting 5 day period between the 15th to the 20th November.

Ranked within the top ten courses in the world, the Royal Melbourne East Course was designed according to the rigid demands of course design specialist Dr Alistair MacKenzie, while the West Course included the professional input of famous Australian golfer Alex Russell. Up against a fast, intricate topography, rapid greens and ruthless bunkering, the players will be truly tested on this tough forest course.

Showcasing a fine selection of golfers, the tournament will be played on a composite course consisting of 12 holes from the West Course and 6 holes from the East Course. You´ll be able to see the top ranking players take each other on up close and personal, while some 600 million homes will tune in to watch the competition from afar.

The tournament has seen some breathtaking golf over the years with some truly nail biting finales. The first Presidents Cup took place in 1994, with the US team taking the trophy across the water with a secure 20-12 victory. They won it again the following year, in a excruciatingly close encounter led by the majestic golf of Arnold Palmer, but in 1998 the International team finally delivered with a resounding victory. While every year never fails to spark the imagination, 2003 will always be remembered as a classic encounter, with Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, hitting for the International team and the USA team respectively, clashed in a sudden-death playoff. With the two golfers playing into the twilight and night falling, the two captains, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, decided that the cup should be shared  between the two nations. The rule has stood ever since.

Last held in 2009, the USA retained the trophy with a resounding 19.5-14.5 victory in San Francisco, but this year will see a powerful International team stake their claim to the cup in what promises to be one of the most thrilling encounters yet.

The Royal Melbourne Golf Club, located in Blackrock, Victoria can be easily accessed. Located just south of the metropolitan Melbourne area, regular bus services will run from the city centre.

American Express credit card holders can book tickets for the President’s Cup via the Ticketmaster Australia website. Tickets can be purchased using Membership Rewards Points collected on American Express credit cards.
